This collection is housed in five folders. Folder one contains a collections list of items received from Lucien Beckner, eulogy and resolution read at Norwood's Masonic lodge, a family history written by J.W. Norwood, 1906 commencement program for the State College of Kentucky (now the University of Kentucky), and an 1878 letter concerning a fossil exchange. Folder two contains legal correspondence, personal correspondence, receipts for registered letters, and handwritten notations concerning financial and professional obligations. The third folder contains letters, clippings, and legal documents pertaining to the affairs of the Russellville, Kentucky Herald-Enterprise newspaper. Folder four contains newspaper obituaries for Norwood and folder five is oversized and has lists of fossils, a Masters Degree for Norwood, and a Masonic document.

Charles J. Norwood was a geologist of some note during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He held positions as Dean of the University of Kentucky College of Mines and Metallurgy, was the third head of the Kentucky Geological Survey, and was a pioneer in the field of mine safety. Norwood was also part owner of the Russellville Herald-Enterprise, and at the turn of the century briefly taught Darwinian theory at Bethel College. From the description of Papers : letters, s...
